Career Development FAQ
How will this system help with career development?
When the new job standards are in place, the campus will see greater consistency between positions performing the same job in different departments. People doing the same work will have the same titles. The required knowledge and skills will be identified for each job. You will be able to see what training or development is available to become more qualified to move to the next level (provided there is a business need for this role) or to another job family. Will there be more chances for career growth in the future?
The new job structure will make it easier to see which jobs you can move into and what skills are needed for those jobs. The campus will be able to set priorities for limited training funds because we will know which skills are needed, supervisors will have the tools to encourage and support staff in their career planning, and employees will be able to better manage their own careers and increase their skills and experience. After the skills and knowledge are identified for all the jobs, how soon will you provide the training I need to follow my chosen career path?
Training opportunities are dependant on the job you are interested in and the skills and knowledge you have already. The campus currently offers training for many jobs; for example, we have classes on BFS and HRMS and other business systems, online learning is available through Calpact and e-Learn (via the Blu Portal), and the campus offers comprehensive programs in financial management, supervision, and leadership. We will continue to expand the curriculum in core competency areas such as communication, multicultural competence, project management, customer service, and other skills and knowledge we believe will be important for many jobs. More e-learning opportunities will provide access to learning at the desktop. Visit the Career Development Resources for additional resources for self-directed learning (available in the Related Info sidebar).
