Performance Management at Berkeley

(8/20/07) Dear Campus Community,

Effective development of staff depends on regular feedback about performance. Last year, in response to feedback from both supervisors and employees, I asked Human Resources to develop tools and training to facilitate performance evaluation and career development.

While I am happy to say that the campus has made great strides toward improving our performance management process and supporting staff, our work continues in this important effort.

This year we are introducing new evaluation forms that will help us ensure consistency in performance evaluation across campus. The use of these forms and a standard rating scale will allow us to promote fairness and transparency, encourage career development and mobility, focus our training resources, and support succession management.

Our campus is committed to providing staff employees with regular feedback through a system that fosters and rewards excellent performance. I expect supervisors to give their employees objective feedback on their performance, noting both strengths as well as areas for growth and improvement, and to support the professional growth of their staff. I encourage supervisors to work with their department HR managers to introduce the new forms this year for use in the 2008 cycle, set clear performance objectives and professional development goals for their employees, and continue to communicate with employees about their progress throughout the year.

For more information, contact your department HR manager or visit the Performance Evaluation and Planning Forms page on the Career Compass website.

Thank you for your support of these important steps toward continued excellence.

Supervisors: Please print this notice and post it for employees who do not have access to e-mail at work.

Sincerely,

Robert J. Birgeneau
Chancellor
